They Call It Protection. I Call It Exhausting.

They say they’re protecting me.

From bad people.

From bad decisions.

From going out too much.

From trusting the wrong friends.

From wearing something they don’t like.

From being outside for “too long.”

And I understand that they worry.

But sometimes I wonder if protecting me means controlling every part of my life.

I have to explain where I’m going, who I’m going with, when I’ll come back, why I want to go, and sometimes even why I want to go in the first place.

A simple plan with friends can become a whole discussion.

“Who will be there?”

“Why do you need to go?”

“What if something happens?”

“Just stay home.”

Eventually, you stop asking.

Not because you stopped wanting to go.

You just got tired of hearing no.

You start making excuses instead of explaining the truth. You keep plans to yourself. You become good at pretending that you don’t care about the things you secretly wish you could experience.

And then they wonder why you don’t tell them anything.

They say, “We trust you.”

But trust doesn’t feel like checking every decision.

Trust feels like knowing that I might make mistakes and still believing I can learn from them.

I don’t want to be careless.

I don’t want to ignore everything they’ve taught me.

I just want the chance to make some choices for myself.

Because growing up means learning how to handle the world—not being kept away from it forever.

Maybe someday they’ll understand that I never wanted less love.

I just wanted more trust.

Because when every boundary is called protection, you eventually stop feeling protected.

You start feeling exhausted.

This really captures the difference between being protected and being controlled. Wanting trust doesn’t mean rejecting your family’s love—it means wanting the space to grow, make mistakes, and learn while still knowing you have them to come back to. 🤍🌱

Sometimes what they call “protecting” feels like controlling every breath. Care should give you safety—not take away your freedom.

Yes, very often parents use the term "Protection", but what they really mean is "restriction". Because it's easier to say no, then to explain why something might be bad. If they can teach us why some things are not safe or should be avoided, then we can learn to make those decisions better for ourselves as we get older. But explaining fears is very hard, i think. Definitely harder than just saying, "I am the adult, you listed to me". And that's why even parents with lots of love can struggle with this. I hope we all learn from this and do differently for the next generation of kids.

This is so well said. It really highlights the difference between teaching someone how to navigate the world versus just keeping them in a bubble.
